Cobnar Road Improvements

Friends of Graves Park are undertaking a massive fund raising campaign in a bid to bring major improvements to part of Graves Park. The area around the Cobnar Road entrance to the park has become badly run down over the years and the recreation facilities are now a disgrace, with roundabouts removed and swings missing. But now an opportunity has arisen to rectify this situation, and one that Friends of Graves Park, as a registered charity is well placed to exploit.

The Living Spaces initiative has offered an opportunity to fund drastic improvements to the whole area. A scheme devised by Friends of Graves Park, in co-operation with Sheffield Council would see the area replanted and bring in recreation facilities to meet the needs of modern youth.

A draft outline scheme has been prepared and costed out at around £80,000. Under the Living Spaces scheme that would require FOGP to provide some £40000 in matched funding. However some £8000 is already available from section 106 monies generated by new housing in the area. Sheffield Council has also pledged a further £20,000 to the project.

This leaves a sum of £12,000 to be raised to allow the scheme to become reality. Local funds and businesses will be approached but much of this finance will have to be raised locally. Consequently Friends of Graves Park would ask park users, local schools, local businesses, in fact anyone who can do any fund raising to help out.

We hope that by holding sales and coffee mornings much of the required money can be raised. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to bring real improvements to a neglected area of Graves Park and one that is frankly too good to miss. It also allows local people to raise a stake in the improvement of their own environment.

It is a vital part of the matched funding that local people participate. We need local involvement in devising the scheme, selecting equipment and facilities, and also in final plantings. Our current proposals are to replace all the swings, slides and roundabouts in the current tarmaced area, as well as providing seating and shrub beds. There would also be youth areas with picnic tables, goals and fitness equipment of the type shown. We need your feedback as Living Spaces requires that local people have a stake in their own projects.

Friends of Graves Park along with representatives from the Council met up with Living Spaces on site for discussions, and the proposed scheme received a positive reception.
