Friends of Graves Park: News

During October 2000 work finally got under way on the first phase of restoring Norton Nursery to parkland. The land was cleared and architects had been in attendance. Unfortunately at this point delays crept in, and we enlisted the help of the Charities Commission to speed things along.

Finally on November 5th 2001 a serious effort is being made at Norton Nursery. Appropriately, considering the date, work commenced with the demolition of the old boiler house. This was quickly followed by landscaping activities. These are expected to be completed by mid December.
In the spring of 2002, local people should be able to start planting bulbs and trees in the newly landscaped part of Graves Park. It has been a long wait; 67 years to be exact, but finally the people of Sheffield should be able to enjoy this piece of parkland so generously given to them, by J G Graves, in 1935.

The Friends of Graves Park intend to errect a monument to J G Graves in this latest part of the park that bears his name. We are open to ideas as to what form this monument should take.

With generous sponsorship from Sheffield Newspapers, 10000 leaflets have been printed, and these are now be available at the Animal Farm and local libraries.

The Friends of Graves Park is made up of ordinary people from the community. We would welcome your ideas on how your park should evolve. Better still join "The Friends" and have a part to play in the parks future.

We will post regular updated bulletins as the work on the nursery land progresses.
